Privacy Policy — Obelus

Obelus ("the app", "we", "us") is a personal finance tracker. This policy explains what information the app handles, how it is used, and the choices you have. Obelus is designed to be local-first: your financial records stay on your device, and information only leaves your device when a feature you choose to use requires it.

Who we are

Obelus is developed and operated by the app's developer ("the developer"). For any privacy question, contact us at support@obelusworks.com.

Data stored on your device

All of your financial data — transactions, accounts, balances, budgets, categories, savings pots, investment holdings, trips, and chat history — is stored locally on your device in an on-device database. We do not operate accounts and we do not upload or store this data on our servers. If you uninstall the app, this data is deleted with it.

Information sent to third parties when you use certain features

Some optional features send data to third-party service providers so the feature can work. We do not sell your data, and we do not use it for advertising.

AI chat & assistance. When you send a message to the in-app AI or use AI to log or analyze transactions, your message together with the relevant financial context needed to answer it is transmitted through our processing service to AI providers Anthropic (Claude) and Google (Gemini), which generate the response. A randomly generated, per-installation identifier is sent with these requests solely to apply fair-usage limits; it is not linked to your name or any account.
Receipt scanning (camera). If you scan a receipt, the captured image is sent to Google (Gemini) to extract the transaction details. Images are used only to produce that result.
Voice input (microphone). If you use voice entry, audio is processed by your device's built-in speech-recognition service (provided by Google or Apple, depending on your device) and converted to text. Obelus receives only the resulting text, which is then treated like text you typed.
Market prices. To show up-to-date values for investments, the app requests public market and exchange-rate data (stocks/REITs and currency rates via our price-relay service; cryptocurrency prices from CoinGecko). These requests fetch public price data and do not include your financial records.

Permissions the app may request

Camera — only to scan receipts, when you choose to.
Microphone — only for voice entry, when you choose to.
Internet — for the AI, market-price, and receipt features above.

You can decline or revoke these permissions in your device settings; the rest of the app continues to work without them.

What we do not do

We do not require an account, name, email, or login to use the app.
We do not include third-party advertising.
We do not include third-party analytics, tracking, or crash-reporting SDKs.
We do not sell or rent your personal information.

How to delete your data

Because Obelus stores your financial data only on your device (we operate no account and no server that holds your data), you are always in control of it. You can delete your data at any time:

Delete individual records — in the app, remove any transaction, account, budget, holding, trip, or other entry directly.
Clear all app data — in your device's Settings → Apps → Obelus → Storage, choose Clear data to erase everything Obelus has stored on the device.
Delete everything — uninstall Obelus. All data stored by the app is removed from your device with it.

What is deleted: all of your Obelus data — transactions, accounts, balances, budgets, categories, savings pots, investment holdings, trips, and chat history — since it is stored only on your device. What is kept: nothing is retained by us, because we do not store your data on any server. Data sent to power optional cloud features (AI assistance, receipt scanning) is processed transiently to fulfil your request and is not stored by Obelus; any retention by those providers is governed by their own policies linked above.

Children

Obelus is not directed to children and is intended for users aged 17 and over. We do not knowingly collect information from children.
